How to do a 5m Wheelie on a Mountain Bike - Our Step By Step Guide

“Everyone loves wheelies, they make a steady ride a lot more fun!” - Ed Clancy

Take a look at Ed’s demo video and then check out our step by step guide below.

Step 1

Check your conditions & equipment.  It’s best to practice wheelies on grass and on a mountain bike rather than a road bike.  Keep your saddle a bit lower than usual, stay in a low gear, always wear a helmet and keep your finger hovering over your back brake!

Step 2

Ride along slowly in a straight line in a low gear. Crouch forward slightly in preparation of throwing your weight back.

Step 3

Simultaneously throw your weight back, vigorously pull up on the bars and pedal hard. This should hopefully bring the front wheel up off the ground.

Step 4

Continue to pedal hard until you feel yourself coming up to a balance point, once you approach this balance point you can modulate the pressure on the pedals to maintain the wheelie height. Always keep a finger on your back brake so if the wheelie does go too high you can always save it with your back brake!
